Company Overview

Helix specializes in creating mattresses tailored to specific types of sleepers, utilizing its renowned sleep quiz to match customers with the ideal Helix mattress for their unique requirements. The main product lineup comprises six mattresses, strategically covering a variety of sleep preferences by offering three firmness levels (soft, medium, or firm) and two sleeper types (side sleepers or back and stomach sleepers). These six mattresses are further categorized into three lines: Core, Luxe, and Elite, with additional options like the Plus model, designed for larger individuals, and a kids’ model.

One notable mattress in their collection is the Helix Midnight, purposefully designed to cater to side sleepers. Comprising four layers, this hybrid mattress incorporates individually wrapped coils and memory foam for pressure relief. While it may not be the most budget-friendly option, its pricing falls on the more affordable side of the average range.

Helix Mattress Features

Material

Standing at a height of 11.5 inches, the Helix Midnight mattress introduces multiple foam layers, ultimately supported by a coil base. The uppermost layer features the company’s exclusive Memory Plus Foam, contributing a layer of plushness to the mattress.

Beneath the memory foam top layer, you’ll find two responsive foam layers, which collectively establish the mattress’s medium-firm sensation. The subsequent layer incorporates pocketed coils, reinforced along both sides of the mattress lengthwise, enhancing its structural integrity.

At the foundation of the Midnight mattress lies a high-density foam layer, known as DuraDense Foam, providing additional support and durability. The mattress is enveloped in a knitted cover, aptly named the Soft Touch cover by Helix. In assessments conducted within our 360 Lab, our testers likened the texture of this cover to that of cotton jersey.

Firmness & Comfort

Helix rates the Midnight mattress at a firmness level that falls between 5 and 6 on the mattress firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. Our testers echo this assessment, describing the mattress as having a softness that allows for some sinking when lying on it.

This medium firmness can be particularly well-suited for lightweight sleepers who tend to perceive mattresses as firmer than individuals with average or heavier body weights, as they don’t sink into the mattress as readily.

It’s worth noting that the Helix Midnight leans towards the softer side, and our testers observed that the edges of the mattress did not offer particularly strong support. This characteristic posed some challenges for our largest sleep tester, who weighs around 250 pounds, as he could feel the mattress sagging when lying on it.

Pressure Relief

Our team experienced the medium firmness of this mattress, which allowed them to sink into its surface. This characteristic can be advantageous for side and back sleepers seeking a mattress that provides cushioning for common pressure points like the shoulders and hips.

However, individuals with larger body sizes might discover that the Midnight mattress lacks the necessary support, potentially leading to discomfort during sleep. One of our testers, weighing 250 pounds, noticed excessive sinking when lying on his side, describing it as akin to creating a depression in the mattress.

Furthermore, stomach sleepers might prefer a mattress with a bit more support to prevent excessive sinking. When our 130-pound sleep product tester laid on her stomach on the mattress, she observed that her midsection sank more than her head and legs, resulting in her body assuming a U-shaped position. Instead of alleviating pressure, this caused added strain on her neck and lower back.

Temperature Regulation

Hybrid mattresses are inherently known for their natural breathability, thanks to the inclusion of coils that facilitate airflow within the mattress, allowing body heat to dissipate rather than becoming trapped.

However, it’s worth noting that the Helix Midnight does not incorporate additional cooling components commonly found in other mattresses, such as gel-infused foam. Despite this, our lab tests indicated that the Midnight maintained a temperature-neutral environment. While it didn’t provide a cooling sensation, it also didn’t appear to retain heat from our testers.

For those seeking an extra cooling boost, there is an option to upgrade the mattress’s cover for an additional cost. The enhanced cover is crafted from Helix’s GlacioTex fabric, which incorporates cooling fibers designed to redirect heat away from your body, promoting a cooler sleeping experience.

Edge Support

The Helix Midnight features reinforced coils along its right and left sides. If you desire reinforced coils encompassing the entire mattress perimeter, allowing for robust support even when sitting at the foot of the bed, you have the option to upgrade to the pricier Helix Midnight Luxe.

However, despite the presence of reinforced coils on the sides, our testers observed that the mattress’s edge was too soft to adequately support their weight, leading to a sinking sensation. This may hinder some individuals from comfortably sleeping near the mattress edges, potentially making the bed feel cramped when sharing it with a partner or a pet. Moreover, it could pose challenges when getting on and off the bed.

Motion transfer

While the Midnight is classified as a hybrid mattress, which can typically exhibit bounce due to its innerspring components, the individual wrapping of each coil in fabric plays a pivotal role in mitigating motion transfer.

Our sleep expert assessed the Midnight as moderately bouncy. She didn’t perceive any disturbance when another tester, roughly double her size, sat down on the mattress. However, she did notice his movements when he exited the bed.

If you share the bed with a partner, particularly one who is larger than you, you may indeed sense their motions while resting on the Midnight. Nevertheless, unless you are an exceptionally light sleeper, these movements are unlikely to be significantly disruptive.

We absolutely love our Helix mattress! It’s hands down the best mattress we’ve ever had. We’re so happy we chose Helix. It’s incredibly comfortable, and both my husband and I sleep really well every night. Plus, it’s still in fantastic condition with no sleep divots or body-shaped holes. We wouldn’t think twice about ordering another Helix mattress in the future.

Conclusion

The Helix Midnight stands as a hybrid mattress within the mid-range category, offering a blend of luxurious comfort and exceptional support. It excels in providing deep pressure relief and a cozy embrace of memory foam, making it especially appealing to side sleepers. However, individuals with more substantial body weight or those who favor stomach sleeping may find a firmer option more suitable.
